The full time staff of 80 is supported by 12 part time firefighters and approximately 50 volunteers who operate out of 5 stations utilizing and array of engines, ladders, rescues, tankers and brush trucks.

Personnel in this division also complete annual inspections of over 4,000 hydrants, assist with pre-fire plans, business inspections, smoke detector installations and fire safety classes.  The personnel in the Operations Division are proud to serve those in our community and take pride in our professionalism.

Training

The Training Section of Newton County Fire Service falls under the Operations Division.  Our training section is responsible for all new hire training, re-certification, officer development and continuing education for all employees.

All suppression personnel are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of “in-service” training each month.  The training section develops and distributes monthly classes for our personnel to complete to achieve the state mandated training requirements.  We also complete skill checks and hands on training to ensure our personnel are well prepared. The training section also assist in the completion of annual pump testing, hose testing, physical agility testing and face piece fit testing.

In 2007, Newton County Fire Service employees completed over 25,000 hours of training and continuing education.  Newton County Fire is currently in the process of building a state of the art training facility in cooperation with the City of Covington Fire Department.  This facility will be home to our training section and will include classrooms, engine bays, burn building, training tower, drafting pit, extrication area and driving course.  The addition of this facility will strengthen our employee development and further our mission of serving Newton County.
